General Information
How many fellows will be selected?
We expect to have about 20-30 Fellows, and about 10 Project Leads.
How are fellows selected?
Fellows are selected based on their previous data and analytics experience and their demonstrated passion for assisting nonprofits. Typical applicants are professionals who have had some experience working with data as part of their full-time jobs. Alternatively, applicants may bring data experience from schooling (e.g., as part of a program for economics or statistics), research projects, or internships. Data experience may vary widely, and there is no definitive list of skills required to apply.
Past volunteers have included economic consultants, data analysts or data scientists at tech companies, data visualization specialists, economics PhDs, program managers, software engineers and financial analysts who have only worked with Excel. Most important is commitment to our mission and an interest and enthusiasm to apply and expand your data capabilities. Below is a PDF of the profile of our 2021 cohort.
I do not live in the San Francisco Bay Area. Am I still eligible to apply?
We previously only accepted applicants in the Bay Area. For the first time, we are breaking ground by accepting remote fellows nationally for the Data Fellows program.
Are students eligible for the fellowship?
Full-time undergraduate students are not eligible to apply for either the data or teaching fellowships, but students concurrently enrolled in a Masters, PhD, or professional program (e.g., MBA) who have data experience are eligible to apply.
How long is the data fellowship?
The project engagement itself lasts 6 months (January - June).
What is the expected time commitment for the fellowship?
Most fellows will spend 5-10 hours a week.
Will teaching and data fellows be able to work together?
Yes! Both data and teaching fellows will attend our monthly Hackathon and socials. We plan for our entire cohort to get to know each other.
What does the Data Fellowship cohort look like?
Below is a profile of our 2021 cohort (PDF) as a guide. This is not meant to be limiting in any way, however.

Will fellows be given a stipend?
Delta Analytics does not offer stipends to data fellows, but fellows will be provided mentorship and training opportunities. Additionally, we provide a small budget for monthly activities with your team. When is the deadline to submit my application? Applicants are considered on a rolling basis. Are applications for project leads accepted? We are not actively recruiting for project lead positions. However, if you are interested in this role and have led projects as part of your full-time employment or other organizational involvement, please describe your relevant project management experience in your fellowship application. How will I get matched with a project? Matching is done based on: (1) Interest: We aim to give you a project based on what you’re passionate about in your application. (2) Need: We aim to give you a project that you will succeed in with your skills. Will I know my project before I apply? Project selection occurs in tandem with volunteer applications, so you will hear about your project staffing after you complete the application and interview process. |
How many teaching fellows will be selected?
To be determined. Our application and recruiting process for the 2021 cycle will begin in February 2021. What are the different areas I can contribute to as a Delta teaching fellow? Delta teaching fellows: 1) contribute to new curriculum development (theory and Python code) 2) expand upon existing content 3) work to make content as accessible as possible 4) teach in person in the Bay Area and internationally. I have a full time job, will I still be able to be a Delta teaching fellow? Yes. Most of our fellows work full time and donate their time to Delta in their free time. How do we choose our partners? We choose partners who are known in the local community and learning ecosystem. Our partners allow us to expand our course internationally and at home locally in the Bay Area and support our mission of building technical capacity around the world. Where will I teach? Most of our teaching fellows develop curriculum and teach locally in the Bay Area. Much of what determines where you teach depends upon your personal availability and interest as well as the needs of our local partners. Will there be financial support for fellows traveling to teach with international partners? Yes, we are committed to covering basic costs (accommodation and transportation) for international teaching fellows. For 2021, we have no plans for in-person International teaching engagements. |
Project Staffing and Software:
When will I hear back about my project and teammates?
Applications are reviewed on a rolling basis. You will hear back about project staffing and teammates in December.
What data analysis software does Delta use?
For the Data Fellows program, we use the best tools based on the requirements of the project and the skills within the team. In the past, Delta has used R, Excel, Tableau, Stata, and SAS. Note that Delta does not provide any software. Previous project teams have relied on open source software such as R or pre-installed software on fellows’ computers (e.g., Excel). In your fellowship application, please feel free to describe what statistical or data analytics software you are more experienced with. You and your team will decide together what common language to use for the project.
For the Teaching Fellows program, we primarily use Python.
