2020 Grant Recipients

Delta Analytics is excited to be working with CareerVillage (CV) for yet another year! CV is a nonprofit whose mission is to democratize access to career information and advice for underrepresented youth. Delta Analytics is helping CV organize/categorize their content to better match the true structure of the world's occupations, and helping identify and visualize which occupation areas that they are performing relatively better/worse in.

Learning Equality is committed to enabling every person in the world to realize their right to a quality education, by supporting the creation, adaptation and distribution of open educational resources, and creating supportive tools for innovative pedagogy. Delta Analytics is helping query for and visually represent metrics to understand engagement with digital educational resources on Learning Equality's offline open-source Kolibri platform.

Delta Analytics is excited to be working with IFF for the second year running. IFF is a mission-driven lender, real estate consultant, and developer that helps communities thrive by creating opportunities for low-income communities and people with disabilities. 
Delta is helping IFF analyze withdrawn causes in our loans' approvals by studying conversion rates.

Delta Analytics is excited to be working with Tarjimly again this year. Tarjimly’s products matches refugees, aid workers, and others in need of translation services with volunteer translators. This project will focus on improving the matching algorithm that takes as an input the language pair that is being requested (especially given that the interface is exclusively on the Tarjimly app now) and outputs a recommendation on which volunteers should be contacted to request their help. Delta will be building dashboards to track matching performance as well.

Alaska Housing Finance Corporation’s (AHFC) mission is to provide Alaskans access to safe, quality, affordable housing. AHFC recently developed a free open source building monitoring system (BMON) that measures real-time energy use and provides a complete summary of operations. The system is able to track building occupancy, temperature, electricity, and fuel use as well as access data from multiple sources. Delta is analyzing data from 168 buildings over six years for energy and cost savings as well as assessing  impacts on building performance after installing BMON.

myAgro focuses on increasing farmer impact and yield through an innovative tech-based mobile layaway system, allowing farmers to save for their higher quality seed, fertilizer, and training. Their North Star is to work with 1 million smallholder farmers (supporting 10 million family members) by 2025 to increase their income by $1.50 per farmer per day to move out of poverty.
Delta Analytics is building dashboards, analyzing trends within the data, as well as helping with myAgro's data architecture and tools for data warehousing.

Raising a child isn’t easy, but it doesn’t have to be hard.  Bright by Text's mission is to help all families give kids a bright beginning so they can grow into healthy, happy and successful adults. Delta Analytics is helping Bright by Text learn more about their ideal subscriber, analyze trends in types of content that attract greater engagement and with predictive modeling.

Real Talk by MyHealthEd, Inc is a mobile app that connects teens with authentic stories and trusted resources on sensitive topics, like sexual health and mental health, to help them know they are not alone in their experiences growing up. MyHealthEd, Inc's mission is to ensure that every teen has access to the resources they need to be healthy, regardless of who they are or where they live.
Delta Analytics is helping MyHealthEd, Inc with analyzing their data, implementing key infrastructure updates to support ongoing data analysis, and making recommendations for how to manage data and analyses. Dashboards and a predictive NLP model are key components of the deliverables.

Mental Health Partners (MHP) provides immediate access to expert mental health and substance use care so people can enjoy healthy and fulfilling lives. Their vision is for Healthy minds, Healthy lives, Healthy communities.
Delta Analytics is working with MHP to enable more effective use of an existing shared dataset, emergency department utilization for Medicaid members. This involves improved data management and analysis processes, building dashboard functionality with user-friendly data visualization, and planning for future additional behavioral health-related datasets.

USAHello is a free online platform that helps refugees, asylum seekers, immigrants and their receiving communities thrive with high-quality online information and resources in many languages. Program areas include: a self-paced online classroom (using Learndash), hundreds of resource pages (Wordpress), and a hybrid app built in partnership with UNHCR (the UN Refugee Agency).
The Delta Analytics team is supporting the development of an analytics dashboard with data visualization functionality that brings together critical metrics from all of USAHello's platforms, from user experience to impact measurement.

InPlay is a nonprofit whose mission is to connect underserved kids and youth to summer and after-school programs that ignite their individual interests and talents, thereby reducing the achievement gap. Delta Analytics is helping InPlay conduct a market landscape analysis in specific school districts to assess the supply and demand for out-of-school time learning programs. The Delta team would also help with dashboards to identify which programs are most in demand year-over-year, as well as to highlight areas of unmet need through Geographic Information System (GIS) mapping.

Read to Me Project (RtMP) addresses the alarming fact that 7 out of 10 children in Monterey County are starting kindergarten as much as two years behind in cognitive, vocabulary and language skills. The program helps under-served children achieve kindergarten readiness by engaging 4th, 5th and 6th grade students to mentor and read to their young family members at home. Delta Analytics is helping with an initial impact analysis engagement by reviewing 4 years of Greenfield Union School District data covering student demographics and academic assessment scores.

(CV) is a San Francisco based nonprofit whose mission is to democratize access to career advice and guidance for underserved youth by building a platform that connects experienced professionals with students interested in pursuing that career. CV also provides additional services through their partners in especially underserved communities. The Delta team has been tasked with improving CV’s ability to match student questions with the right professionals.

LitLab is a nonprofit that offers direct service programs to serve their mission of building a strong foundation for young learners. They offer literacy resources for use by educators and parents in the form of Kidapolis which serves as a learning platform for children. The Delta Analytics team’s goal is to enable data driven decision making through the development of a dashboard visualizing key usage metrics.

Tarjimly builds and operates a platform that matches volunteer translators with refugees and aid workers that require translation. The platform has successfully connected over 9,000 volunteer translators to over 17,000 aid workers and refugees to provide on demand services. The Delta team is working with Tarjimly to improve their matching algorithms and provide more reliable service through the app.

Open Media Foundation We are excited to welcome back Open Media Foundation (OMF) for a second year and second project with us! The Open Media Foundation provides trainings and tools to enable greater civic engagement. As part of their efforts to improve local government transparency, OMF has collected and transcribed local government meetings which are available via their API. The Delta team last year built an auto-tagging system to make these meeting transcripts more searchable. This year, the team has been tasked with building interactive visualizations which will make identifying topics and meetings of interest even easier.

Dost Education’s mission is to empower parents in impoverished areas of India with ways to enrich their children’s early learning opportunities. Dost accomplishes this by delivering audio content to their mobile phones. The audio content contains suggested exercises to integrate into day to day activities for children to assist in their development. The Delta team is building dashboards and metrics to provide Dost with additional insight into their use behavior.

Wordnik is the world’s largest English language online dictionary! The Delta team is working on improving the ability for Wordnik to recommend related words outside of definition based similarity or semantics (e.g. synonyms, antonyms). The improved recommendation system will also suggest words based on other users’ search trends.

Child Trends is the leading nonprofit research organization focused on improving the lives and prospects of children, youth, and their families. Child Trends maintains a databank that tracks various indicators of child and family well-being including Educational Attainment and Foster Care. Their project with Delta Analytics involves analyzing data collected by the Jim Casey Youth Opportunities Initiative on interventions for foster care youth. The Delta team will be delivering dashboards that will be used by program administrators to help assess the impact of the interventions.

Glide is a San Francisco based nonprofit that works to address the needs of San Francisco’s homeless and marginalized communities. Glide’s team administers a number of programs including daily free meals, a legal clinic, and health services to those it serves. The Delta team will be working with Glide to develop metrics to better track the impact that their programs have on breaking the cycle of homelessness.

IFF is a Chicago based nonprofit which provides real estate development services such as financing for other nonprofits. Their clients include charter schools, affordable housing developers, and women’s shelters. The Delta team is working with IFF to model IFF’s lending portfolio with the goal of predicting which loans are likely to close. This will allow IFF to better allocate their capital and lending practices.

Learning Equality is dedicated to bringing educational resources to those around the world. Learning Equality accomplishes this by deploying Kolibri, an offline application that allows educators to use and distribute curriculums and content from sources such as Khan Academy. The Delta team is building dashboards and user interface to enable Learning Equality and its Kolibri administrators to extract insights from how students progress through curriculums.

TechnoServe is a leader in harnessing the power of the private sector to help people lift themselves out of poverty. Delta is working with TechnoServe to analyze their project level data globally. Delta engaged with Technoserve for the third year in building an impact estimator for potential project that they will fund.

BBC Media Action is an independent arm of the BBC with the mission of utilizing the power of media and communication to reduce poverty and empower people around the world. The Delta team worked to analyze BBC Media Action’s social media data for insights across audience, content, and engagement patterns. The team will also provided recommendations on improving BCC Media Action’s internal data accessibility for easier insights derivation after our project engagement is over.​

MindRight is a Washington DC based nonprofit that provides mental health coaching services through their SMS text platform which connects underserved youth to trained coaches. The Delta team partnered with MindRight and built the foundation for their analytics capabilities through dashboarding key metrics on student engagement and mental health outcomes.

Farmeline is a Ghana based social impact organization dedicated to providing small farmholders with the resources needed for them to become successful entrepreneurs. Farmerline provides SMS text based services that provide farmers with access to agriculture education and connects them to larger markets for their products. The Delta team partnered with Farmerline and developed a model for optimizing how and when messages are delivered to their clients to maximize farmers’ utilization of the information provided.

IDEO.org is the nonprofit arm of IDEO with the mission of leveraging human centered design to build and support products with the aim of impacting their focus areas. IDEO.org’s STEPS program provides clients with self-service resources and access to other financial services to provide support to those who are having trouble making ends meet. The Delta team deep dove into IDEO STEPS data to build metrics and data tools for assessing the impact that these have on clients utilizing IDEO’s services.

Medic Mobile is a San Francisco based nonprofit which designs, delivers, and supports the development of software for health workers providing care in hard to reach communities. Our Delta team is working with Medic Mobile to research the risk factors that contribute to poor outcomes for children under 5 suffering from pneumonia, diarrhea, and malaria based on data collected on Medic Mobile’s platform from patients in Mali.

Mission Economic Development Agency (MEDA) is a San Francisco based nonprofit focused on strengthening financial outcomes of low income Latino families living in the Mission. The Delta team worked with MEDA to develop a framework and methods to estimate the impact that MEDA’s programs have on their clients’ financial health.

One Degree is a SF based nonprofit that helps low income families discover and access the resources they need to create a path out of poverty. The Delta team worked to improve One Degree’s recommendation engine and identify service gaps to enable users to more easily find the services they need and give service providers a better idea on how to deploy their resources.

The Open Media Foundation (OMF) is a Denver based nonprofit which provides media resources and technology to nonprofits, governments, and individuals to empower everyone to engage in their community. OMF has created a public API with access to a database with the minutes and transcripts of government organization meetings. The Delta team worked with OMF to develop a natural language processing model to automatically categorize and tag these transcripts to allow the public to more easily engage on the topics they care about.


2017 Grant Recipients

Kiva is an international nonprofit, founded in 2005 and based in San Francisco, with a mission to connect people through lending to alleviate poverty.  Delta Analytics is using KIVA data for our machine learning for good initiative, which aims to build technical capacity around the world, and empower anyone to leverage data for good in their communities. We use a subset of KIVA data tailored to each country we teach in. For example, our pilot course in Nairobi, Kenya has focused on Kiva lending patterns over 11 years in Kenya. We are partnering closely with the Kiva team to make sure our work is impactful and is actionable for their local offices.

Botanic Gardens Conservation International (BGCI) is a membership organisation representing a network of 500 botanic gardens in more than 100 countries, including the largest and most influential gardens in the sector. BGCI is the largest plant conservation network in the world, and aims to collect, conserve, characterise and cultivate samples from all of the world’s plants as an insurance policy against their extinction in the wild and as a source of plant material for human innovation, adaptation and resilience. Delta will be working with BGCI to do a gap analysis of BGCI's databases on trees, threats and botanic garden collections to increase their knowledge of the world's threatened trees. BGCI wants to assess the importance of botanic gardens in tree conservation and identify the world's most threatened trees that are missing from botanic garden collections for future conservation action.

Delta is working with TechnoServe to analyze their project level data globally. Delta will consolidate their data sources, help define key metrics for analysis, and deliver insights that will help TechnoServe make key strategic decisions.

Samasource is a non-profit social business that strives to end systemic poverty by giving work instead of giving handouts. 
Delta is working with Samasource to build out data infrastructure that will tie together multiple facets of operations and impact metrics. Samasource is seeking to marry together business operations data (revenue, margins, etc.) with agent performance data (tenure, time-per-task, submission metrics) and impact metrics (prior income, education level, post-employment surveys, etc.).

Delta is working with Rainforest Connection to improve and build upon existing models that use audio data streamed from recycled cell phone sensors positioned in endangered forests. The goal is to track ecological markers such as the presence of specific species, and harmful human activity such as illegal logging. Rainforest Connection wishes to combine existing models to improve accuracy, and add new models that take into account more information, such as the distance between a sensor and an event in the forest. Improved models will enable Rainforest Connection to better serve scientific and environmental partners by providing more precise and accurate real-time information about the presence of certain species and the overall health of an environment.

BUILD equips youth from under-resourced communities for high school, college, and career success by enabling students to develop and run their own small businesses. Delta is working with BUILD to utilize demographic and student college enrollment data that BUILD has collected on their programs. BUILD is seeking to evaluate the curricular components of their programs based on the data in order to maximize outcomes for participating students. This analysis will allow internal evaluation of BUILD’s program efficacy, and inform data-driven changes to the curriculum. ​

​Delta is working with City Year to develop a dashboard tool based on demographic and outcome data that City Year has collected on their programs. City Year is seeking to better measure and assess how their programs affect the outcomes of different types of students, to prioritize where to allocate their resources, more effectively to communicate their work and better tracking of the organization’s fiscal health. This dashboard will provide City Year with greater insight into their impact, financial health status and enable greater data driven decision making to achieve their revenue goal to support scaling by 2023.

United Way of the Bay Area (UWBA) aims to be a catalyst that enables disadvantaged communities to achieve financial sustainability. Delta will help UWBA assess what sequence of programs are most successful in lifting clients out of poverty and keeping them there.

Village Enterprise operates in Kenya and Uganda. Its mission is to assist individuals living in extreme poverty to launch successful and sustainable businesses. Delta will be assessing the historical impact of micro-enterprises started by participants in the training programs to will help guide future investments and understand participant outcomes.

TechnoServe provides business solutions to poverty by working with enterprising people in the developing world to build competitive farms, businesses, and industries. Delta will be helping TechnoServe identify how its impact varies across its diverse project portfolio.

Transforming Education supports educators and education systems by equipping students with the mindsets, essential skills, and habits they need to succeed in college, career, and life. Transforming Education has asked Delta to assist in answering its two broad research questions: what mindsets, essential skills, habits, and skills are worth focusing on, and what can education systems do to build these skills?

KUOW is one of the founding National Public Radio member stations in the 1970s. Its mission is to create and serve an informed public, one challenged and invigorated by an understanding and appreciation of events, ideas and cultures. Delta has been asked to provide metrics about the demographics and listening preferences of KUOW listeners and figure out the best ways KUOW can personalize services to them.

BioLite is a developer of safe, productive, and environmentally friendly energy sources. Its main innovation is the BioLite HomeStove, which provides those in developing nations relying on wood stoves with a clean and efficient source of energy. Delta will help BioLite improve its analysis of key data including sales and customer survey results. Delta will also help implement a new inventory tracking system to help BioLite more effectively bring its products to developing markets.

Karibu Solar

Karibu Solar Power is a social enterprise that aims to make high quality solar lighting and energy affordable in Tanzania. Delta is designing a survey with one of our PhD experts to evaluate Karibu's pilot program; these data will help Karibu refine its business model and implement its social objectives.

Tenants Together, California's only statewide renters' rights organization, is a nonprofit dedicated to defending and advancing the rights of California tenants to safe, decent and affordable housing. Delta is helping Tenants Together develop a system to better understand the data collected from their hotline and to help the organization track metrics of interest.

AAH
The Association of Art Historians is a UK-based membership organization for those with a professional commitment to and interest in art history and visual culture. Delta is helping AAH analyze trends in art history as an academic discipline to inform AAH's advocacy and marketing efforts. Our work for AAH can be found here.

Livelyhoods creates jobs for youths in urban slum's in Kenya through the distribution of life changing products. Delta will be working on data collection to estimate the impact of Livelyhoods programs selling life changing products & help visualize existing data.

Eneza Education aims to spread access to education in rural Africa through its mobile application, which provides virtual instruction to students. Delta is helping Eneza Education quantify its impact by analyzing trends in data collected on over 350,000 students via Eneza's mobile platform.

Generation Citizen teaches young adults how to take effective political action. Through unique civic-engagement programs in schools across the United States, the organization provides students with the knowledge and skills necessary to instigate change. Delta helped Generation Citizen assess its programs through analysis of classroom observations and survey data.

FSD
The Foundation for Sustainable Development achieves community-driven goals through asset-based development and international exchange in Africa, Asia, and Latin America. 
Delta Analytics, LLC helped FSD analyze inquiry and contact data to improve marketing efforts and track program interest.

Roots of Success is an environmental literacy and green job training curriculum-development non-profit. The organization has had its curriculum implemented in over 300 high schools, job training programs, and secondary education institutions with over 10,000 graduates. Delta is utilizing data that Roots of Success collects from students, instructors, and other stakeholders to construct a comprehensive report that will highlight the impact of its curriculum.

Partners in School Innovation is a national education reform non-profit headquartered in San Francisco that aims to transform teaching and learning in the lowest-performing public schools. Delta is aggregating data from various contact points into a dashboard to quickly gauge impact and identify action areas.
