Abstract: Interested in using your data skills to give back? Delta Analytics, a Bay Area non-profit, is community of 100+ data scientists, economists, analysts, and software engineers seeking to leverage their data skills to bring about positive change for social good. Delta fellows working with two grant recipients, Open Media Foundation (OMF) and Career Village, utilize natural language processing to solve a similar problem in text classification, however, employing different techniques due to labeled/unlabeled data.
In this talk, we will contrast the approaches used for our work with OMF and Career Village, discuss the Delta Analytics fellowship and partnership process, and describe our newest venture, free machine learning education to build technical capacity in communities around the world.

"Data Science for Good: Stopping Illegal Deforestation Using Deep Learning"

Abstract: Interested in using your data skills to give back? Delta Analytics is a Bay Area non-profit that provides free data science consulting to grant recipients all over the world. Rainforest Connection, a Delta grant recipient, worked with Delta fellows to detect illegal deforestation by applying deep learning to audio streamed from rainforests in Peru, Ecuador and Brazil. We will share insights from our work with Rainforest Connection, discuss our fellowship and partnership process, and suggest some best practices for skill based volunteering.
