OUR CURRICULUM
Since 2017, the Delta Teaching Fellows have been focused on making machine learning more accessible at a global scale.
Each year, we select a small cohort of leaders from around the world who are passionate about machine learning for our Global Teaching Fellows program. Our goal is to support you as you hone your teaching skills to bring educational content to your community, and to connect with educators worldwide who aim to bridge technical skill gaps.

The program is 6 months long, and is focused around monthly hackathons designed to introduce pedagogical principles to teach machine learning and build community among our fellows. We pair each fellow with a dedicated mentor to support them throughout their journey. The program culminates in a graduation lecture, where the fellow prepares and delivers a lecture on a topic of their choice in the field of machine learning.

Application closes on: March 27, 2021

Frequently Asked Questions

How are teaching fellows selected?
The first step is to submit your application. After the March 27th deadline, the Delta teaching team will review applications and follow up with you about next steps. While applicants should have an interest in teaching in the future (either formally or informally), we do not require prior teaching experience in order to be considered - the fellowship will equip you with these skills. We are looking primarily for community leaders who are passionate about machine learning.

I do not live in the San Francisco Bay Area. Am I still eligible to apply for the teaching fellowship?
Yes. While Delta Analytics is based in the San Francisco Bay Area, the Global Teaching Fellows program aims to build technical capacity all over the world. Our 2021 program will be conducted virtually.

How long is the teaching fellowship?
The Global Teaching Fellows program is a support program and community that lasts 6 months. During this time, we will host monthly skill building sessions designed to introduce pedagogical principles to teach machine learning; past topics include teaching to different levels of learners and leading a coding lab. We will pair each fellow with a dedicated mentor to support them throughout their journey over these 6 months. Finally, the program culminates in a graduation lecture, where each fellow prepares and develops a lecture on a topic of their choice in the field of machine learning. We welcome global teaching fellows to continue to be a part of the larger Delta Analytics community after the end of their engagement.

Will fellows be given a stipend?
We will provide a small stipend to support program expenses. Delta Analytics is an entirely volunteer-run organization, so the global teaching fellows will not be a paid position.

What support will I receive?
The Delta Analytics team is committed to formally supporting teaching fellows with:
  1. One-on-one mentorship: We are committed to setting you up for success throughout the fellowship. Our mentors will meet with you on a weekly or biweekly basis, to act as a sounding board, and discuss ideas and concerns. You will be provided clear, actionable feedback to help you grow in your goals as a fellow.
  2. Small Stipend: As discussed above, we aim to provide a small stipend to help fellows cover related costs during the course of the fellowship.
  3. Community: A key goal of this program is to connect teaching fellows across different communities and countries, and to build out an ecosystem of machine learning leaders and educators.
  4. Speaker series:  We will be inviting leading educators in the open access space to come and discuss their own journey to teach machine learning. We expect to have speakers who teach in very different settings, from youtube to top universities to research collectives.

During the course of the fellowship, you will get a chance meet and collaborate closely with members of the Delta Analytics team. The following team members will be working closely with the global teaching fellows: Melissa Fabros, Brian Spiering, Alicia Tsai, Ugaso Sheikh-Abdi, Nicole Orzan, Mélisande Teng, Riddhi Dasani, Sara Hooker, and Amanda Su. Read more about their backgrounds here.

Do I need to be familiar with machine learning?
Yes. We expect our teaching fellows to have a strong foundation in the fundamentals of machine learning. Fellows should be ready and excited to evangelize these theoretical concepts with their local communities.

Do I need to be familiar with Python?
Yes. We expect our teaching fellows to be able to engage with both coding and fundamental theory. Our existing coding labs are written in Python 3. Our coding labs are a key component of our curriculum, emphasizing the application of machine learning methods to answer questions on real-world data.

What does the Delta Analytics curriculum Look Like?
Our theory modules are freely available here.

Do I need to teach the Delta curriculum?
No, our main goal is supporting you in developing a curriculum that you think matters for your community. You can certainly use the Delta curriculum, but we also support fellows in developing new content and leveraging local datasets.
